In 2009-2010, Joseph Young averaged just under 27 points per game for the Yates Lions’ high-flying offense thanks largely to his ability to connect from beyond the three-point line.

On Monday night, Young used that ability to win the All-Star 3-Point Shootout as part of the 66th Annual Texas High School Coaches Association All-Star Basketball Game at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio.

Young, a key contributor to the 2009-2010 Class 4A state basketball champions, netted 13 three-pointers in 60 seconds to defeat five other competitors, including Mackey McKnight of Langham Creek.

Young previously committed to Providence College but is attempting to get a release from his commitment by the NCAA to stay closer to home to be near an ailing family member. Speculation among observers is that Young is looking to follow in the footsteps of his father, former Phi Slamma Jamma star Michael Young, to the University of Houston.

Jordan Huber of Orange Grove and Tanner Milson of Cedar Hill, both sons of their schools’ head coaches, finished tied for second place with 12 buckets each. McKnight finished tied with Tavis Stapleton of Carthage and Brandon Jefferson of Lewisville, each with 10 treys.

The contest was part of the annual all-star game and festivities that accompany the annual THSCA coaching convention and school

Quote of the week

"People ask me what I do in the winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring."
