All-star football games routinely produce great individual performances on offense, defense and special teams. But rarely do those outstanding individual offensive, defensive and special teams performances come from the same player.
On Tuesday at the Alamodome in San Antonio, the Texas High School Coaches Association 76th Football All-Star Game was the setting for such a rarity.
Andy Erickson, a receiver from Class 4A Division I state champion Lake Travis, led the South squad to a 36-23 victory over the North with a pass reception, a punt return and a kickoff return for touchdowns.
Erickson also helped seal the win with a fourth quarter interception. For his efforts, the incoming Rice Owl freshman was named the offensive player of the game.
The margin of victory was the result of a big offensive outburst in the final period by the South. But for three quarters, it appeared they might be their own worst enemy thanks to turnovers and an inability to convert fourth down attempts. The South posted 157 yards offensively in the first half, but were 0-for-3 on fourth down conversion attempts.
The first half was marked by three turnovers by both offenses. One of those turnovers accounted for the first score of the game.
The North took the early lead with 9:31 to go in the first on a two-yard touchdown run by Jarman Johnson of Pilot Point that immediately followed an interception by defensive player of the game Jake Weddle of Frisco Liberty.
The South countered with a long drive highlighted by a run and 24-yard reception by Marion Grice of Nimitz. But the drive bogged down at the one-yard line as the North defense held South quarterback Tyler Arndt of Cuero out of the end zone on back-to-back sneak attempts on third and fourth downs.
The defense for the South squad would put their team on the scoreboard on the following play, though, as North running back Nathan Jeffery from Caddo Mills was tackled in the end zone for a safety.
Turnovers by both teams, including an interception by Bryce Callahan of Cypress Woods for the North, kept the score at 7-2 after one quarter.
In the second quarter, other Houston-area players had opportunities to shine. Sam Holl of Katy picked off a pass to kill a North drive. Wide receiver Bradley Miller of Sealy had three big receptions. Even Brazoswood defensive lineman Dartwan Bush got a reception as a tight end for the South.
Still the only second quarter score would be Erickson’s 72-yard punt return with 38 seconds left in the half.
The North would recapture the lead in the third, but a 96-yard kickoff return by Erickson would allow the South to be close, trailing 17-16 headed to the final quarter, despite not having an offensive score for the evening.
The South offense would post 20 unanswered fourth-quarter points in the span of under five minutes before allowing a North touchdown in the final minute of play.
Quarterback Stump Godfrey of Gilmer connected with Auston Shipley of Bastrop on a seven-yard touchdown pass with exactly ten minutes to go to give the South a lead they would not relinquish. Erickson’s third touchdown of the night, a 19-yard reception from Godfrey followed with 8:33 to go. Nimitz’s Grice scored the final South touchdown with just over five minutes to go.
The all-star game is part of the annual THSCA coaches’ convention and school. The 2010 gathering concludes Wednesday with the annual Hall of Honor inductions.
